A little thing called insight

Some time back I brought a friend of mine to a spiritual event. To be honest I was very surprised he wanted to come, particularly because I know how much he enjoys his alcohol and how much he cherishes going out in bars. He is not very comfortable being alone, and he feels totally lost if he’s not in a relationship.

I had been looking forward to this sacred chanting evening for so long, but the night did not go at all as I had hoped for. First of all , he showed up at my house all flustered and stressed, and my heart jumped in my throat from him racing his car manically to the event. Then he dropped me off saying he needs to go and get a coffee, and how he would be right back. He came back after the chanting had already begun, and I could smell both coffee and alcohol on his breath.

I felt so sorry for him, that he felt the need to drink alcohol to “endure” this sacred environment.

I later shared the story with a friend, and to my surprise she was laughing loud and joyously expressed how refreshing it was to hear about a man who is that dedicated to a woman that he feels he needs to drink alcohol to last though an event that is important to her.

I could not disagree with her more. There is nothing funny to me about a man who feels he needs to drink alcohol and coffee to enjoy a sacred chanting experience. That being said, I love drinking a glass of wine or two with a beautiful dinner, and I’m not at all saying he can’t ever drink alcohol. There is however a time and place for everything, and this was not either of those.

I am so grateful for my growth over the years, and for no longer going into relationships with people who are not ready to experience the present moment.

I’d like to think of it, as this little thing called insight.
