Tips for sleeping better – and a wonderful relaxation exercise!

I just love a good night’s sleep! The truth is, if I don’t sleep well I’m not very productive. Sure, I might very well be able to function on auto pilot, and even get some exercise done, but when it comes to using my brain – without good rest, all the projects I’m working on end up on the back burner.

My life is filled with all kinds of projects, and as a lot of them involves conceptualizing and contemplating on ideas, if I’m not running on all cylinders, it’s a problem for me.

To me, good sleep also means better dreaming, and if I don’t get enough sleep in the night I’m often too tired when I wake up to even be able to think about my dream adventures. I love feeling connected with my dreams, so for that reason alone finding nice remedies for better sleep is worth gold to me!

When I meet with clients who suffer from sleep problems and insomnia, before we even start going deeper, to see if there may be an underlying issue, perhaps an inner fear that has been ignored, or maybe a life event that has not been properly processed, or perhaps lack of organization, we start off by first discussing dietary habits. Because sometimes, this is all it comes down to!

As much as I love coffee, there are days when I drink a few too many cups, and perhaps little bit too late in the day. I feel best when I drink one cup of coffee early in the morning, and then just half a cup around 10AM. Any later than that, and my sleep will be impacted in some way.

Mixing in alcohol is never a good remedy for deep sleep. Even though you may indeed fall asleep faster, with alcohol in your body, you will suffer from a very shallow sleep, and wake up feeling exhausted.

There are days though, where we haven’t had much coffee, no wine, and we still can’t fall asleep. Perhaps we feel stressed and overwhelmed, and think we have to figure out all the answers before going to sleep!

The good news is, you can put your problems aside when you lay down to rest. There is no need to think about them in bed. This is your sacred rest time. If you really want to think about your problems, put the alarm for one hour earlier in the morning, and write down the issues you feel you have control over. Whatever you can’t control, pray for help, and surrender.

There is one amazing yoga pose I like doing at night, to help me fully relax before going to bed. Especially if I’ve been out for a brisk evening walk, or come back home from a late night speaking event.

Lay down on the ground, on your back, all way way against a wall, with your legs straight up. When you get into the pose, place your hips all the way towards the wall, with your legs straight up, with your feet flexed, raised towards the ceiling. Then lay here for about five minutes, with your eyes closed, just breathing, and relaxing.

It’s one of the most powerful relaxation poses I know, and it works wonders for deep sleep!
