In my mid-20s I lived in London. I had a small flat in the middle of Knightsbridge, and my kitchen window overlooked Harrods department store. It really was a fabulous location. I could walk pretty much everywhere, or easily jump on a red double decker to get wherever I wanted to go.
Most of my time I stayed around Knightsbridge, South Kensington and Chelsea, all adorable vibrant areas with an exciting pulse from all global citizens coming and going. I was as a writer for a magazine, and dated an Irish poet, so my life was overflowing with literature, eloquent words and romantic poetry!
Every Sunday morning I would spend hours reading the Sunday papers in cute little cafes. One day, as I was browsing through the Sunday Times I noticed a small advertisement – they were running a poetry competition…and it had to be a Haiku poem.
This was my first time encounter with this word, and I was joyously drawn to it with loving admiration, and decided to participate right there on the spot by writing my own Haiku.
I felt so much love writing it. I can still feel the little hedgehog, his loneliness in the rain, and his sense of hope there may be a friend there – when he saw his own reflection in a small water puddle. It went something like this:
The Lonely Hedgehog
a lonely hedgehog
finds joy in a puddle of rain
and he smiles
I didn’t win, in fact I don’t think I ever even heard back from the paper, but writing this little Haiku is a precious memory that I will cherish in my heart forever!
Poetry has a loving way of touching our hearts, whether we write it or read it.
I am so grateful for beautiful words.
