Learn how to Meditate

What are the benefits of meditation?

Meditation connects us with our higher selves, and reminds us of who we really are. We develop trust and belief in ourselves. We become more confident, and because every moment of meditation helps us connect with our inner power, we come back fueled with energy and mindful alertness. We develop clarity, compassion and feel connected to not only ourselves but also people around us. We feel happier, and we get more things done, and guess what – it also helps reducing stress levels!

Meditation is a beautiful practice of connecting to our inner stillness, which helps us get to a place of observation and see life situations from new perspectives – where we are not lost in thoughts and emotions, but from a place of clarity.

For me, it is the most sacred practice of my day. This is the time where I reconnect with my soul, feel who I am, reach a place of connection, and float out in stillness. It is a time for surrendering, and observing life rather than being in it.

When I go into meditation, it feels like I float out in a field, sideways,up, down and behind my body – and I know I’m there, even if my body is not. There is stillness, and so much love and light.

How do you meditate? Are there any tips for meditating? Any techniques that can help us?

I first began meditating about 11 years ago, shortly before heading on a spiritual journey to a small ashram in India –  where I meditated every day for 21 days, from morning to night  and lived in divine silence. It was a magnificent time of my life and really helped me build a sacred meditation practice. Most of all, I learned how to surrender to what is, and to observe rather than engaging.

In my ashram, we meditated on a sacred mantra given by our guru. Using mantras when learning to meditate can be very helpful. I still use mantras at the beginning of my meditation sessions, I love the vibration of the words. The mantra can be said silently within ourselves, or we can also repeat it verbally.

Many mantras begin with the Sanskrit word OM – which is known as the universal sound from which all other sounds are formed, it is the most sacred universal sound. OM can also be used on its own as a very powerful meditation mantra. It beautifully helps clear the throat chakra and powerfully aligns our physical bodies with our spirit.

When you sing OM – it sounds like AUM. Start with Ah – feeling the sound in your abdomen, then moving up to OU – to the solar plexus/navel area and chest, then MH – feeling the vibration in your throat chakra, reaching up to your crown chakra, on top of your head. Repeat as many times as you like!

A short and sweet mantra I like to use is OM, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. Shanti is a Sanskrit word for peace, and this mantra is a golden invocation for peace.

I like to say it at least three times.

Another wonderful tool for meditating is observing our breathing. When we observe our breathing – we see our breathing flows like the waves on the ocean, continuously flowing. We don’t need to control it. It just happens. Simply observe your breath flowing in and out, and focus on that. It is a beautiful sensation.

We can also observe our thoughts. Our thoughts, emotions and feelings come and go. Just because a thought comes into our consciousness, it does not need we actively need to engage in it! We can choose to observe it. To see it arise and flow away. The same goes for emotions. Just because an emotion is there, it does not mean we need to take action. To get lost and consumed in an emotion is not a productive way of dealing with it. Rather, setting a time aside for understanding our emotions with more compassion is the key to soul growth.

Meditation is a time for connecting with our higher selves, and feeling who we really are. There is no need to think about anything. Just observe and connect with the divine energy inside you.
